christian cota, a la mode

Christian Cota took inspiration this season from the French Impressionists, so perhaps it’s only fitting that on Wednesday, the designer could be found partying Parisian-style. Yaz Hernández hosted a dinner on Cota’s behalf at midtown’s Brasserie Cognac, drawing celebrants such as Cornelia Guest, Jana Pasquel, and Denise Rich, as well as one fresh-faced Belen Hudson, who turned out to be the granddaughter of Plácido Domingo. “I’m working in fashion,” Hudson explained, going on to elaborate that she’d recently graduated from high school and had moved to New York to wedge a toe in the door of the industry. Cota, however, isn’t Hudson’s boss. “No,” Hudson said, “I’m working for a showroom. I love Christian’s dresses, though…”—Maya Singer

Natalie Portman In Christian Dior – FINCA 25th Anniversary Gala

Natalie Portman attended the 25th Anniversary gala for FINCA International in New York City last night.
The actress attended as part of her role as their ‘Ambassador of Hope’.
As an ambassador for Dior, Natalie wore a Christian Dior dress.
Her look was ultra feminine. I love the embroidered details on the sheer overlay. It’s a cute girlie look.
I won’t pretend I love the pumps, but I guess something simple like this was appropriate for the event.
Ivanka Trump jewels complete her look.

Lana Del Rey In Antonio Berardi – ‘Born To Die’ Video

This week Lana Del Rey released her latest music video, ‘Born To Die’.
The videos sees her in a cathedral surrounded by tigers who lie regally either side of her throne, unmoving, as she wanders through the building and makes out with a heavily tattooed man.

In one scene she’s seated on a throne with a floral wreath on top of her wavy locks whilst wearing a white Antonio Berardi Spring 2011 gown with cut-out details.
The regal gown seems perfect in the cathedral setting.
Lana Del Rey’s debut album ‘Born To Die’ is out on January 31, 2012, on Interscope.

Fashion at the Oscars, Scandal at Ungaro, and More…

Valentino could be Oscar-bound. The Last Emperor is “on the shortlist” for best documentary nominations, which means that if A Single Man makes the cut, this could be the most glamorous awards ceremony in history. [WWD]
Eva and Jamie’s ads for Calvin Klein may be too steamy for a long shelf life, but the old “sex sells” adage seems to be truer than ever. The duo have been signed again for CK’s spring ads, which will be shot by Steven Klein and boycotted by prudes everywhere. [WWD]
The backlash over Lindsay Lohan’s appointment at Ungaro has apparently reached the upper echelons of management. Chairman Asim Abdullah is “locked in a fierce battle” with CEO Mounir Moufarrige, who hired Lohan. And to think, all this over some nipple pasties. [Page Six]
Demi Moore claims her skinny-mini W cover—in which a piece of her hip seems to have actually been removed—has not been airbrushed. “I have no hips!” she tweeted. Dems, this will not gain you sympathy points. [HuffPo]
Sadie Frost, ex-wife of Jude and best friend of Kate, is writing a memoir. We’d love to see the casting if this gets turned into a movie. [Daily Express]—Alison Baenen

Louis Vuitton’s Huaihai Global Store Opening – Gong Li In Louis Vuitton

Actress Gong Li was on hand to cut the ribbon for the opening of Louis Vuitton’s Huaihai Global Store in downtown Shanghai yesterday looking beautiful wearing all black.
Last night she was also at the unveiling of LV’s Pudong Global Store at the Shanghai IFC Mall.
It’s the first time the French luxury house opened two stores in the same city on the same day.
Gong Li is a goddess, and she’s very much the first Lady of Louis Vuitton which is why invited to be part of these store openings.
She’s always front row or attending a chic LV party.
The Asian actress is the first to wear a look from the Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 collection.
I love her vintage velvet floral dress which has an dirndl-esque petticoat skirt.
I would’ve liked to have seen this dress without the necklace, but it’s still a fabulous look.
I hope we’ll see more of these dresses on the red carpet.
Unfortunately this was the best picture I could find.

Runway To Film Independent Spirit Awards – Olivia Wilde In Ralph Lauren

Most Refreshing Award
It’s been a while since we last saw Olivia Wilde on the red carpet, so I was happy to see her at the 2010 Film Independent Spirit Awards.
The stunning actress is known for wearing fantasy fairytale gowns, but on this occasion she wore a paisley print silk Ralph Lauren Fall 2009 gown.
I love this look. I think it’s the most relaxed we’ve seen Olivia on the red carpet so this totally works for the event.
Her look is paired with gold necklaces and matching clutch to complement the gold tones on her gown.

Luella And Lula’s Post-Show Dinner
Luella Bartley’s intimate dinner Monday night at Soho landmark Kettner’s wasn’t just a post-show celebration. Also on the “to-fête” list was the launch of Bartley’s new bag and the just-published eighth edition of Lula magazine, British Vogue alum Leith Clark’s biannual fashion rag. Bartley collaborated on the latest edition (issue five’s guest editor was Kirsten Dunst) and current cover model Chanel Iman joined Keira Knightley—in straight-from-the-catwalk Luella—Rupert Friend, and Erin Wasson for the sit-down dinner. Music video director Kinga Burza and boyfriend James Righton (of the Klaxons), Daisy de Villeneuve, and photographer David Sims (among other London scenesters) rounded out the group at the restaurant that was a one-time haunt of Oscar Wilde. We’re sure Wilde—clotheshorse and wordsmith that he was—would have approved.
Achieving this collector’s feat takes heart, sole and closet space
”Every time I go to a meeting somewhere, at least one person in the office will be wearing sneakers.” Mattias Braach-Maksvytis with his dog Trotski and his collection of 25 pairs of sneakers. Photo: Edwina Pickles
MATTIAS BRAACH-MAKSVYTIS is a sneaker fanatic with a goal. The 20-year-old university student wants to own enough sneakers to wear a different pair each day of the month.
And with 25 pairs already taking up plenty of space in his Marrickville home, he has almost reached his target.
The sneaker culture in Australia may still be well behind the massive phenomenon in the US but it is catching up.

Simon Wood, the Melbourne editor of the global magazine Sneaker Freaker has about 1500 pairs of sneakers.
He started the magazine 10 years ago as a hobby – and in the hope of scoring lots of free shoes – but it has turned into an international business and is now the only Australian magazine to be translated into German, Spanish and Russian.
Mr Wood, or Woody as he is known in the sneaker community, said New York and Tokyo were the leading cities for sneakers but Australians had embraced the shoes and scores of people, mainly young men, now owned dozens of pairs.
”Definitely when it comes to per capita, we more than hold our own when it comes to sneakers,” Mr Wood said.
He said there was a movement towards ”keeping them on ice” which means fans buy the shoes but never wear them.
Mr Wood said while the huge popularity of basketball influenced the sneakers worn in the US, Australians ”take a little bit from everywhere”, with many people owning no other shoes than sneakers.
”Every time I go to a meeting somewhere, at least one person in the office will be wearing sneakers,” Mr Wood said.
The brand manager for Foot Locker, Sarah Hayward, said its basketball range was one of its biggest sellers.
Thousands of people queued two days before Christmas to snare a pair, or two, of the $239 Jordan Retro 11 Concords. ”When it comes to the basketball range, they are definitely the ones where people tend to line up,” Ms Hayward said.
Senior analyst at IBISWorld Ian MacGowan said men’s footwear was the fastest growing sector in shoe retailing.
”What we have seen is a trend towards men becoming a lot more fashion conscious,” Mr MacGowan said.
Mr Braach-Maksvytis, who works part-time at a rock climbing gym, said his obsession with collecting shoes began when his girlfriend, who has about 50 pairs of high heels, bought him his first pair of Vans. Since then, he has been spending as much as $150 on a pair of sneakers, mainly Vans, although he has his heart set on some custom-made Nikes from the US.
Jennifer Hudson In Maria Lucia Hohan – 2012 NAACP Image Awards

Following her spine-tingling Whitney Houston tribute at last weekend’s Grammy Awards, Jennifer Hudson performed ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ with Ne-Yo at the 2012 NAACP Image Awards on Friday.
She also joined Ne-Yo to present the Vanguard Award to ‘Star Wars’ director George Lucas wearing a Maria Lucia Hohan gown.
The beautiful baby-blue silk gown dress features a draped bust and a twisted chiffon detail on the waistline.
Normally I would find a necklace of this size bothersome with this neckline, but I love it on this occasion.
A half-up, half-down hairstyle and a beautiful pink lip colour completed her look.
Jenna Dewan wore a similar gown to the Golden Globe Awards.

Hilary Swank In Tory Burch – Giffoni Film Festival

Hilary Swank attended the 41st Giffoni Film Festival in Giffoni Valle Piana, Italy yesterday.
She wore a very beautiful summery Tory Burch ‘Isobel’ dress.
Her lemon dress was paired with probably the most unattractive shoes I have seen worn by a celebrity this year.
The Tory Burch wedges have red base with gold rope ties around her ankles.
They are so heavy and they don’t complement her dress at all.
Hilary is one of my faves, but this look is a fail for me.
This whole look straight out of Tory Burch’s Pre-Fall 2011 ad campaign.
